APSU Football plays Mercer in Homecoming Game Saturday

APSU Football - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University football team will step out of Ohio Valley Conference action to host Mercer for Saturday’s Homecoming contest with kickoff set for 4:00pm.

Austin Peay is 0-6 overall and 0-5 in the OVC after a 34-14 loss at No. 3 Jacksonville State.

Mercer comes into the contest at 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the Southern Conference after topping Western Carolina 38-24 in their last game.

The two teams have met on the gridiron twice, 2014 and 2015, after the Bears started football in 2014. APSU has dropped both meetings, 49-21 in 2014 and 28-7 in 2015.

The Govs held the No. 7 offense in the country, JSU, to just 9-of-20 through the air for 72 yards. APSU also became the first team to rush for 100 yards against the Gamecocks in 2016.

Running back Kendall Morris turned in the Govs first 100-yard rushing game in 2016 with 103 yards at UT Martin.

APSU Kendall MorrisMorris enters the contest 26th on the Govs all-time career rushing list with 998 yards. He needs just two yards to become the 25th Gov to eclipse the 1,000-yard career rushing mark. He needs just 27 yards to climb further up the ranking list.

Quarterback Tommy Hays broke a school record in the Murray State game completing his first 14 passes. Hays finished the night 14-of-17 for 160 yards.

Return man Kyran Moore was honored as the Ohio Valley Specialist of the Week after his 98-yard kickoff return against EIU. Moore is the first Gov to earn weekly league recognition since 2012 and the first APSU specialist since 2011.

APSU Jared BeardWide receiver Jared Beard notched a career-high with 11 catches for 176 yards and two TDs against EIU. He missed matching the APSU school record by one catch. He also became just the sixth player to record more than 175 yards through the air in a game in program history.

Beard has caught 105 passes for 1,263 yards and 13 TDs in his career. He ranks ninth in receiving yards, eighth in receptions and sixth in touchdown receptions in the APSU record books.

Linebacker Gunnar Scholato holds at second in the NCAA and leads the OVC in tackles per game at 12.2.

Through six games Scholato has amassed 73 tackles. His 12.2 tackles per game average over the next five games would vault him into the APSU records for tackles in the single season. The current record is 207 set by Bobby Byrd in 1963.

Freshman linebacker Neonta Alexander averages 6.8 tackles per game and is the sixth-ranked freshman in tackles per game.
