APSU Soccer - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Redshirt sophomore Morgan Jackson and senior Gina Fabbro each scored a goal in Friday’s 2-0 victory over Belmont, helping Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team clinch a spot in the OVC Tournament.

It’s the first time the Governors (9-6-2, 4-2-2 OVC) have punched their postseason ticket since 2013.

APSU currently sits in fifth place with 14 points, four points ahead of seventh place to make it official.

“As much as our goal was to make postseason, we have bigger goals than that for this team,” head coach Kelley Guth said. “As a unit, we’re not just satisfied making the tournament. We want to continue improving our performance and finish in the top of the league.”

APSU Soccer - Morgan JacksonThe Bruins (5-7-4, 4-3-1 OVC) came out of the gates quickly, putting five shots on net before the five minute mark.

However, junior goalkeeper Lindsey Todd stood her ground, making five saves on the night for a shutout victory. The win improves her record to 7-2-2 and her goals against average to an impressive 0.87.

It was a special night for one Gov in particular, as following the halftime break, redshirt sophomore Morgan Jackson scored her first collegiate goal. Jackson had only previously attempted two shots prior to Friday, but received a golden chance in the 50th minute following a cross by junior Kirstin Robertson. Jackson took a touch before beating the keeper from close range.

APSU Soccer - Gina Fabbro“Mo is a player who does so many things for us,” Guth said. “She’s such a dangerous player in the wide area of the field and a valuable asset to us, so it’s great for her to have an opportunity to score an important game-winning goal in such a big moment for this program.”

The Govs held Belmont to just three shots in the second half, and an insurance goal from senior Gina Fabbro sealed the victory. In the 86th minute, APSU worked a counter attack into its own end, with Robertson laying a ball off to Fabbro on the right side. Fabbro curled a shot from distance at a difficult angle, but the ball found the side of the inside net.

The goal is Fabbro’s fourth of the season, and 28th of her career which puts her two goals away from tying Ashley Beck second all-time in program history.

Robertson was credited with two assists on the night, giving her 25 points in 2016. The junior is one of only three APSU players to total 25 or more points in a single-season, the other being Tatiana Ariza and the aforementioned Beck.

Austin Peay continues its weekend 1:00pm, Sunday, playing host to Jacksonville State at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.
