APSU Cross Country teams head to Championships in Nashville

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men and women’s cross country teams set their sights on the Ohio Valley Conference Championships, Saturday, at Percy Warner Park in Nashville.

The event will take place at Vaughn’s Creek Cross Country Course, with the women’s 5K beginning at 9:00am, followed by the men’s 8K at 10:00am.

Sophomore Wesley Gray, who was APSU’s top finisher at last year’s OVC Championships (31st), posted back-to-back top 16 finishes to conclude the regular season, making him a contender in the 8K. Meanwhile, freshman Hezron Kiptoo has enjoyed a breakout campaign, with the newcomer rattling off impressive results in each meet.

Other highlights of the APSU lineup include Tyler Smith, who has consistently been one of the Govs top three finishers, another talented freshman in Nash Young and veterans such as Daniel Hamm, Kyle Harmon and Nick Piskor.

The women’s team has been led by junior Becca Wheeler. Wheeler has been the team’s front runner in four of the six meets, and will enter the postseason field after missing the event last season due to injury.

Sarah Carpenter – fresh off her best run of 2016 at the JennaStrong Invitational – Sarah-Emily Woodward and Sarah Eskildson will look for solid results, while seniors Unjala Lester and Hanna Wise will get one last shot at a championship.
