Instant Peay Play: Busy week ahead for APSU Governors and their fans

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – If you’re a diehard fan of Austin Peay State University athletics or just a casual fan this upcoming week will be big for you, as it will be for several of the Governors teams, with men’s basketball, women’s basketball, volleyball and football all having home events over the next seven days.

Opening things up for the week will be the Governors men’s basketball team, who are coming off an Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championship and NCAA Tournament appearance, as they host a pair of exhibition games at the Dunn Center.

Upcoming week sees home games for Austin Peay Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Volleyball and Football.
Upcoming week sees home games for Austin Peay Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, Volleyball and Football.

The first game comes on Tuesday, November 1st, with Thomas More College coming to town for a 7:00pm contest, while Sewanee faces the Govs on Friday, November 4th; also a 7:00pm start time.

These two contests will be the first time Govs fans will get to see Austin Peay’s four new team members (Chris Stocks, Jartavious Dobbs, Sam McCracken and Dre’Kalo Clayton) go up against an opponent.

But it’s not just the men’s basketball team that has a couple of home events this week, with the women’s volleyball team hosting Murray State at 6:00pm on Wednesday, November 2nd, and Morehead State on Saturday, November 5th, at 1:00pm.

Both are huge matchups for the Govs, with APSU battling Murray State and Southern Illinois Edwardsville for the regular-season championship – with APSU currently tied with SIUE for second place in the conference and trailing Murray State by one game in the standings.

Wednesday’s matchup with Murray State is also a part of the Battle of the Border rivalry competition between the two schools, with the Govs hoping to have a large contingent of fans on hand as they battle the Racers for the top spot in the OVC.

The matches are also a chance for the volleyball team to continue one of the best season’s in the program’s history, with the Govs coming into the week with 21 wins already under their belt – which ties the 1997 team for the ninth most wins in a single season.

Along with the volleyball team seeing action on Saturday, the Governors football team will host Tennessee State on November 5th at Fortera Stadium and still looking for its first win of the season, but playing much better on the offensive side of the ball of late – averaging over 25 points per game over its last six contests, including three of those games seeing the Govs put at least 31 points-or-better on the scoreboard.

Finally looking ahead to Monday, November 7th, the Austin Peay women’s basketball team will host its lone pre-season exhibition game at 7:00pm the Dunn Center by welcoming Kentucky Wesleyan.

The game will be the only chance for the five new members of the squad (Ant’Treasia Patton, Bri Williams, Shelbe Piggie, Arielle Gonzalez-Varner, Nieja Crawford) to show off their skills before the start of their regular season.

The next eight days will see four Govs’ teams host six games, a little bit of something for any Govs fan.
