APSU Men's Basketball - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s basketball was in total control from the opening tip against Thomas More, running away with a 112-63 win in the exhibition opener.

Six Governors found their way into double figures for Austin Peay, which posted its first 100-point exhibition contest since 2011 (107-96 against Central Missouri).

Austin Peay shot better than 60 percent from the floor (41-for-67, 61.2 percent) and had a team turnover ratio near three-to-one (20 assists, seven turnovers).

To say the Govs raced out to an early lead sorely undersells Austin Peay’s hot start.

The Govs scored the first 12 points, broke out on a 21-3 run over the first seven minutes and saw the lead swell to 30 before the eight-minute media timeout in the first half. Sophomore guard Zach Glotta provided instant offense off the bench in the first half, hitting all five of his shots in the first half, including four from beyond the arc.

The Govs made the most of Thomas More’s mistakes in the first half. Ten Saints turnovers translated into 18 Austin Peay points, and the Govs found themselves with a commanding 60-20 lead at the break.

Glotta may have gotten hot early, but he was by no means the only Governor to find the range against Thomas More. Junior preseason All-OVC choice Josh Robinson led all scorers with 22 points, 12 coming in the second half, and dished out five assists to boot. Glotta finished with 17, while senior Kenny Jones (15 points), senior John Murry (11), junior Dre’Kalo Clayton (11) and sophomore Jared Savage (10) got into double figures as well.

The Difference

The Governors three-point assault (13-for-26 for the contest) would be enough to down many foes, but their perimeter defense against the Saints proved to be pretty effective as well. Austin Peay allowed Thomas More to shoot just 12.9 percent (4-for-31) from beyond the arc; the Saints were an extremely effective 56.4 percent (22-for-39) on all other shots from the floor.

Up Next for the Govs

Sewanee comes to town for a 7:00pm, Friday contest in the Dunn Center to cap the exhibition slate for Austin Peay. Austin Peay dispatched 91-64 in last season’s exhibition contest.
