Clarksville, TN – A day after becoming the first player in OVC history to win three league player of the week honors in the same day, freshman running back Kentel Williams notched another Austin Peay State University football first, becoming the first Gov to win a national player of the week award by being named the STATS Inc. FCS Freshman of the Week.
Williams established the OVC record for all-purpose yards in a game (399) against Eastern Kentucky on Saturday; the mark is the 20th-highest ever in a FCS game.The 399 all-purpose yards are the most in a game at any level of NCAA football this season (FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III).
Williams carried the ball 19 times for 176 yards (9.3 ypc) and a 7-yard touchdown, caught two passes for 42 yards and returned five kickoffs for a total of 181 yards including a 97-yard touchdown in the second quarter (the 15th-longest return in the FCS this season).
The 176 rushing yards (which included a 69-yard run) is the second-most by an OVC player in 2016.
Williams has played in all 10 games for the Govs, but did not make the move from wide out to running back until four weeks ago.
Since the transition he has accounted for 417 yards on 76 carries while averaging 5.5 yards per game.
He has rushed for five scores, while averaging 104.3 yards per game on the ground.
