The APSU athletics department also showed improvement in its federal graduation rate (FGR), as 63 percent of students who entered the university in 2009 graduated within six years of their initial enrollment.

The Governors saw their graduation success rate improve from 79 percent to 82 percent in this year’s report, which measures those students beginning college in 2009.

That improvement was spurred by gains from men’s cross country (+20%), women’s basketball (+8%), women’s soccer (+8%), women’s volleyball (+6%), men’s tennis (+5%) as well as football (+2%) and women’s track and field (+2%).

What You Need To Know

In eight years, APSU’s graduation success rate (GSR) has improved 14 percent to this year’s record 82 percent.

The Govs football team posted its best-ever GSR rate, with 71 percent of its students graduating within six years.

The Govs women’s tennis team posted a perfect GSR for a fifth-straight year while the women’s golf team hit that mark for a third straight year.

Seven APSU teams posted an improvement from the 2014 to 2015 reports, led by men’s cross country which posted a 20 percent improvement.

In addition, women’s golf and women’s tennis each posted a perfect 100% graduation success rate.

“The expectations and time demands placed on collegiate athletes today are extraordinary,” said Austin Peay athletics director Ryan Ivey. “To excel in the classroom at the rate they have achieved is a true testament to their character and their ability to be successful in everything they do.”

The NCAA developed the GSR to more accurately assess the academic success of student-athletes. The GSR differs from the federal graduation rate calculation in two important ways.

First, the GSR holds colleges accountable for those student-athletes who transfer into their school. Second, the GSR does not penalize colleges whose student-athletes transfer in good academic standing.

The federal graduation rate does not account for transfers in or out of an athletics department. Additionally, the athletics department’s graduation rate was more than double the university’s graduation rate (29 percent).

This marks the 21st year that GSR data have been collected. The NCAA began collecting GSR data with the entering freshman class of 1995.
