APSU Women’s Basketball takes down Trevecca 69-51

APSU Women's Basketball - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team defeated Trevecca 69-51, Saturday in the Dunn Center, improving its record 3-1 – the best four-game start to a season since 2002.

The Governors went on to go 27-4 that season en route to an OVC Championship after beginning the regular season 4-1.

On Saturday, senior center Tearra Banks scored a season-high 18 points by shooting 6-of-10 from the field, and also hauled in six rebounds.

Banks has now totaled 10-plus points in each game this year with at least five boards in the team’s first four games.

An additional 10 Govs scored against the Trojans, including junior guard Bri Williams and senior guard April Rivers recording nine points apiece.

The Govs never trailed in the contest, leading for all but 42 seconds. APSU’s defense held Trevecca to 17 points combined in the second and third periods, limiting the visitors to under 28 percent shooting in each of the two quarters.

Game Notes

Thirty-four of Austin Peay’s 69 points came off the bench, led by Rivers’ nine and junior Sydney Gooch‘s eight points. All nine of Rivers’ points came in the second half, while Gooch made her mark in the first.

Freshman guard Shelbe Piggie broke her scoring drought, scoring her first collegiate bucket with a three and finished with five points.

Junior center Brianne Alexander converted her first career three-pointer, and finished the game with five points.

Senior forward Beth Rates led Austin Peay down the stretch in the fourth period, serving as the center with four guards around her. She finished with four points, a team-high eight rebounds and four assists.

Sophomore guard Keisha Gregory tallied a team-high five assists, added with her two points and four boards.

Freshman guard Nieja Crawford had another solid defensive outing, finishing with a game-high four steals.

Austin Peay held a distinct advantage in the paint, outrebounding the Trojans 43-31.
