Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan’s Thanksgiving Message

City of Clarksville - Clarksville, TNClarksville, TN – This year, inspired by a recent event I attended, I’ve been thinking about the “giving” in our tradition of Thanksgiving.

A week or so before Thanksgiving each year a group of employees from the City of Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department get together and organize a Community Feast at Burt Cobb Community Center.

These volunteers use their own resources and prepare a great meal, and then they gather food baskets and other gifts that they give to the dinner guests.

I attended this year and enjoyed spending time with the guests and this unique group of volunteers. For some reason, the event stayed in my heart. It made me realize just how important it is to give to others and to serve them. It’s this “giving” in Thanksgiving that makes this time of year so remarkable.

The effort by the Parks and Recreation crew is an exceptional tradition on its own, but there are dozens of similar events that unfold across our community each year during the Holiday season. Thousands of people work hard to make these caring and sharing events come to life, and this adds to the massive effort undertaken every week at our social service agencies.

We are fortunate to live in a community where so many people make it their mission to help, to serve others, to give of themselves so that their neighbors may have food and sustenance and shelter. Many share a quiet dedication to acts of kindness that bring happiness and goodness into the lives of others.

On this Thanksgiving holiday, I give thanks for all who understand and share the power of giving, who put others first and live in service. They put true unity in our community, pull us together and make Clarksville so much stronger.

From my family to yours, may we celebrate a season of giving, and all have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
