Fort Campbell, KY – Out of nearly 50 teams, it came down to teams from 129th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion and 716th Military Police Battalion for the final game of the Commander’s Cup Tournament held by Fort Campbell’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation program.

The tournament began in January and ended mid-November with a tie-breaker flag football game between the two teams from 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Sustainment Brigade “Lifeliners,” 101st Abn. Div.

The team from 129th CSSB received the Battalion Commander’s Cup and the team from 716th MP Bn. received the Company Commander’s Cup during an award ceremony November 17th, at Cole Park Commons Conference Center, here.

Sgt. 1st Class Keatron Walls, a mechanic with 227th Quartermaster Company, 129th CSSB, coached and played on many of the teams from the battalion and he received the Fort Campbell Soldier Athlete of the Year Award.

Billy Womble, Fort Campbell’s MWR intramural sports director, said he nominated Walls for the award.

“He’s been a good asset to the MWR Sports Program and his company,” explained Womble. “He wasn’t selected just for athletic excellence, but for his sportsmanship, integrity and service to the community.”

Walls said he didn’t expect to receive the award since he was participating to motivate his Soldiers and bolster teamwork.

Sports are a great way to build teamwork, said Womble.

“It’s about esprit de corps and that unit cohesion and just being together when you’re not on the battlefield or not at training,” Womble said.

Winning the tournament did more than bring bragging rights to the unit, it brought them closer together, Walls said.

“When we were out there playing these sports, the unit cohesion was there,” said Walls. “It was one fight, one team when it came down to trying to win for a certain accomplishment or a certain goal.”

While competing in the tournament over the past 11 months, Walls’ Soldiers got to see a different side to him, he said.

“I do a lot of this for them to show them regardless of who we are with this rank on our chest, were also human beings outside of this uniform,” he said.
