Mike Carn, APSU golfer and Athletics Hall of Fame Member, passes away

APSU Men's Golf - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University has learned that Mike Carn, a NCAA Championship golfer and APSU Athletics Hall of Fame member, has passed away at the age of 66.

A four-year standout (1970-74) on the course, Carn was team “Most Valuable Player” each season and earned three top-10 finishes in Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Championship competition.

The Savannah, GA, native was a three-time choice for the Tennessee Intercollegiate All-State Golf team, and he appeared in the 1973 NCAA Championship as a junior.

For his career, Carn’s four-year 75.49 stroke average ranks among the best in university history, as does his 74.67 single-season mark in 1973.

After completing his APSU eligibility, Carn was a three-time top-10 finisher in the South Carolina Open, including third in 1978. He kept golf a central focus of his work life, serving as assistant golf pro at Spanish Wells Club (1978-82) in Hilton Head, SC, head golf pro at Paw Paw Country Club (1982-83) and course superintendent at Bear Creek Golf Club (1984-89).

He was the superintendent at Savannah Golf Club at the time of his passing.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30pm, Friday, December 16th at Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church, 429 Abercorn Street, Savannah, Georgia. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.

He is survived by his wife Brenda and two children, Mike and Devon.
