APSU Men's Golf - Austin Peay State UniversitySpartanburg, SC – A four-under par final round from freshman Alex Vegh allowed Austin Peay State University men’s golf to hang on and snag a place in the top five in the rain-shortened Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational.

The Govs and Gardner-Webb each finished the 36-hole event at two-over par (289-289-578), sharing fifth place. Radford roared back from six strokes down to take the team title at -12, with Appalachian State, George Mason and the host Terriers rounding out the top five.

Vegh showed why head coach Robbie Wilson moved him in this week’s order.

After Monday’s opening round with an even-par 72—which Vegh and the rest of the tournament completed Tuesday morning after inclement weather halted play Monday afternoon—the freshman carded a final-round 68, one shot behind Radford’s Myles Creighton, the individual champion, for best final-round score of the day. He finished tied for sixth—his second top-10 finish of the spring.

Vegh also posted a pair of eagles during the tournament, on the par-5 No. 15 in the first round and the par-5 No. 17 in the final round.

Erik Hedberg and Sean Butscher each posted solid finishes in the top-30. Hedberg’s even-par final round, which included four birdies, placed him 25th with a one-over 145 (73-72), while Butscher, who opened at even-par in the first round, finished with a two-over 146 (72-74) and equaled Vegh with a team-high eight birdies.

Despite an opening-round 72, junior Hunter Tidwell‘s top-20 streak came to an end at six; he finished tied for 32nd with a three-over 147 (72-75), while freshman Austin Lancaster rounded out APSU’s lineup with a 155 (78-77); Tidwell and Lancaster tied for the APSU lead in par-3 scoring at 3.13/hole apiece.

The Govs return to action next week in Columbia, Missouri, site of Missouri’s Tiger Invitational. The two-day event takes place April 10th-11th at the Club at Old Hawthorne. It will be Austin Peay’s final tournament before the Ohio Valley Conference Men’s Golf Championships, April 24th-26th, in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
