APSU SoftballJacksonville, AL – Austin Peay State University’s softball team rallied from three runs down in their final at bat to have the potential tying and go ahead runs on base, Friday afternoon at University Field versus Ohio Valley Conference leading Jacksonville State, but couldn’t come up with that final big hit to fall 4-3 after dropping the opener 7-0.

The Govs (14-26, 2-10 OVC) hurt themselves early-on by committing four errors in the first two innings, which allowed the Gamecocks to score single unearned runs in each of those innings to go up 2-0.

The score would remain that way until the top of the sixth inning, when APSU’s Kendall Vedder hit her sixth home run of the season out over the left field fence to make it 2-1.

But Jacksonville State (32-9, 11-1 OVC) responded by scoring two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning to extend its lead out to 4-1.

Austin Peay wouldn’t go down without a fight, with pinch-hitter Brett Jackson picking up a one-out single, followed by a base on base to Emily Moore.

A wild pitch would move both runners up a base, with Kacy Acree making it 4-2 with an RBI groundout.

Danielle Lierman’s single would cut the deficit to one, 4-3, with a single to center, followed by Christiana Gable moving the possible tying run to second, with an infield single.

But JSU relief pitcher Whitney Gillespie got the final out for her second save of the season and sealing the Govs 4-3 loss.

Autumn Hanners (6-10) took the loss, going five-plus innings, giving up four runs – only one earned – on three hits and two walks.

In Game 1, Austin Peay fell behind 4-0 after one inning, with Jacksonville State taking advantage of three walks and three hits to score the runs.

The score would remain that way until the bottom of the fifth, when Gillespie hit a three-run homer to extend the Gamecocks lead to 7-0.

Although Austin Peay offense failed to score in the opener, they did have chances, putting runners in scoring position in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings, but couldn’t push anything across against the OVC leaders.
