Owens Cross Roads, AL – Austin Peay State University women’s golf enjoyed its best 54-hole showing in Ohio Valley Conference Women’s Golf Championship play in the program’s history, firing a 920 to tie for fourth with Belmont.
Murray State won the team championship, followed by Eastern Kentucky and Jacksonville State.
The Governors, who led Belmont entering the day, were down by six strokes to the Bruins at one point before a furious back-nine rally to tie it back up.
“I thought the girls battled hard today,” said head coach Sara Robson. “We had some tough lies in bunkers that really hurt us, but we made some birdies today, which helped us save a good round.
“We were behind pretty good after the first nine to Belmont and really battled back,” Robson said. “We needed to battle to stay in the four spot, and we played holes 16-18 pretty well today; birdies and pars helped us gain on the field.”
Sophomore Taylor Goodley led the Govs to the finish line with a 223 (79-71-73), earning a share of ninth place. The El Dorado, Illinois native closed out strong on the back nine, shooting two-under par with three birdies over the final nine holes.
“Taylor had a great round,” Robson said. “Playing the back nine two-under is fantastic, and a couple of those holes on the back had been tough this week.”
Senior Morgan Kauffman capped her Austin Peay career with a final-round 78, earning a top-20 finish in her final career event with a 232 (74-80-78). Her 43 pars led the entire tournament.
Junior AnnaMichelle Moore (77-81-76-234), sophomore Ashton Goodley (77-78-81-236) and senior Amber Bosworth (75-82-80-237) finished 22nd, 27th and 29th, respectively, putting all five Governors in the tournament’s top-30.
Moore tied Taylor Goodley with a team-high eight birdies, while Ashton Goodley equaled her sister with a 4.92 stroke average on par-5 holes for the tournament (tied for fifth overall).
In addition to bringing the 2017 campaign to a close, it also concluded the careers of Kauffman and Bosworth, four-year members of the Governors golf team.
“I thought the seniors had a good tournament,” Robson said. “Both gave us really good rounds and had some great shots the last two days. Those will be big shoes to fill going forward.”
