Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s Kelsey Gross was a force of one, Monday afternoon at Cheryl Holt Field, as the freshman held Ohio Valley Conference opponent Belmont to just a single run, while also driving in what turned out to be the game-winning runs in a 5-1 victory over the Bruins, after APSU dropped the first game, 7-0.
Gross (8-8) limited a Belmont squad that was batting over .300 as a team this season to just four hits and two walks – while striking out four — in her seven innings of work, with the lone Bruins run coming on a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning. She would also account for the Govs (15-27, 3-11 OVC) first two runs of the game, ripping a double down the left-field line in the bottom of the second inning, driving in Carly Mattson and Kendall Vedder – who had reached on a walk and a single.
Emily Moore would close-out the scoring in the second inning, driving in Gross with a double making it 3-0.
Austin Peay would extent it’s lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, with Vedder forcing in Rikki Arkansas with a bases-loaded walk, with Drew Dudley following with a sacrifice fly, scoring Danielle Liermann.
Liermann would be the only player on either team to record more than one hit in Game 2, finishing with a single and a double.
Belmont’s Brooklin Lee (15-7) was the story in Game 1 holding the Govs to just two hits – singles by Dudley and Mattson — while striking out 15 and walking three.
On offense, the Bruins would get two, two-run homers in the contest – one in the second inning and one in the fifth – with their other three runs coming in the fourth inning.
Austin Peay returns to action, 4:00pm, Wednesday afternoon with a home OVC doubleheader versus Tennessee State.
