APSU Softball travels to SIU Edwardsville

APSU SoftballClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s softball team will hit the road heading north to face Southern Illinois Edwardsville, 1:00pm, Friday at Cougars Field for an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader.

The matchup was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon, but weather concerns have compelled the two schools to push up the games up a day to improve their chances to get the games in.

Austin Peay (16-28, 4-12 OVC) is coming into the SIU Edwardsville games having split two OVC home doubleheaders this week with Belmont and Tennessee State, while SIUE (35-10, 10-4 OVC) hasn’t played since last Saturday when they dropped a pair of games of OVC leading Jacksonville State.

APSU Softball - Danielle LiermannThe games will be the 23rd and 24th in the all-time series between the two schools, dating back to their first meeting back on April 12th, 1986, with the Govs trailing in the series 19-3 overall and 8-2 in games played in Edwardsville, IL.

Offensively after the Govs first 44 games this season, they are led by sophomore third baseman Danielle Liermann‘s .321 batting average – which includes a team-best 11 doubles to go with nine home runs, along with a team-high 34 runs driven in.

Liermann also became only the second player in APSU history to record 100 career hits in her first two seasons, Wednesday with a fourth-inning single versus TSU, joining Louranda Sanders (1998-2001) as the only other Gov to accomplish the feat.

APSU Softball - Kacy AcreeRed-shirt sophomore outfielder Kacy Acree is the only other Governors to come into the games batting over .300 on the year, currently hitting at a .302 clip, with eight doubles, four triples and seven home runs, to go with a team-high in runs scored (31) and stolen bases (15).

Two other Govs come in just under the .300 mark, with sophomore catcher Carly Mattson batting .298 and sophomore shortstop Kendall Vedder coming in at .290

Mattson also has five doubles and a team-high 10 home runs on the season, to go with 21 RBIs and a team-best 18 walks, while Vedder has eight doubles, six home runs and 21 runs driven in this season.

APSU Softball - Carly MattsonHer 10th home run of the season that come on Wednesday in Game 2 of the doubleheader versus Tennessee State marks only the seventh time in school history than an APSU player has reached double-figures in home runs in a season.

In the circle, senior Autumn Hanners and freshman Kelsey Gross have carried most the workload this season for the Govs, with Hanners leading the team with a 3.39 ERA in 117.2 inning pitched in her 25 appearances, while posting a 6-12 win-loss mark and 53 strikeouts.

Gross is 9-8 on the season, also in 25 appearances, with 101.1 inning pitched, a 5.87 ERA and a team-high 76 strikeouts.

Senior Christiana Gable (1-6, 5.09 ERA, 23 k’s in 42.2 innings) has the other Govs win this season.
