Mills Family establishes APSU scholarship for Montgomery County students in memory of late son

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – A recent gift from Bobby and Betty Mills to Austin Peay State University will ensure that the memory of their late son will endure and support future Montgomery County-area students as they work toward their educational goals.

The Charles Mills Endowed Scholarship will be awarded annually to a Montgomery County-area high school student planning to attend Austin Peay. The scholarship is in memory of their late son, Charlie Mills, who was attending Austin Peay as an undergraduate student at the time of his death in the mid-1980s.

“We miss our son and we still think about him every day, so, while our health is good and we have the means, we saw this endowment as a way to ensure that his memory will live on forever,” Bobby Mills said.

Mills said he and his wife had been informally providing scholarship opportunities out-of-pocket to area students since their son’s passing, with recipients frequently attending out-of-area universities. Like their son, both Bobby (’65) and Betty Mills (’67, ’78) are alums of Austin Peay, and they felt the time was right to establish a formal giving relationship with the University.

“Both my wife and I grew up in Montgomery County and are alums of Austin Peay, so we thought it would be good to provide an opportunity for local students and the local university,” Mills said. “We had a wonderful lunch meeting with (Austin Peay President) Dr. Alisa White recently, and we were able to share with her a little about our son; he was an outgoing person and was loved by a lot of people, so we want his name to be remembered.”
