Austin Peay State University Professor Steven Ryan to deliver APSU Winter Commencement address on December 15th

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – On December 15th, 2017 Austin Peay State University professor of languages and literature Dr. Steven Ryan will deliver the keynote address at the APSU Winter Commencement. He will speak at both ceremonies, at 9:00am and 2:00pm, in the University’s Dunn Center.

Ryan received his Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Northern Iowa, his Master of Arts in English from Iowa State University and his Ph.D. in English from the University of Utah. Ryan taught at Iowa State and the University of Utah, before arriving at Austin Peay as an assistant professor in 1977.

Over his 40 years at Austin Peay, Ryan has developed a reputation as a serious and gifted scholar, publishing numerous works in prestigious academic journals across the country.

In the late 1980s, he turned his attention to Clarksville and the modern writers who once lived here, including Evelyn Scott and Caroline Gordon. He also developed a graduate level class, Clarksville and the Southern Renascence, which spotlighted this community’s rich literary heritage while providing Austin Peay students with a tangible way of connecting with literary works.

In 2017, Ryan received the University’s top faculty honor, the APSU National Alumni Association Distinguished Professor Award.

Austin Peay began hosting two graduation ceremonies to accommodate the University’s growing number of graduates in 2008. The first ceremony, featuring candidates from the College of Arts and Letters, the College of STEM and the College of Graduate Studies, will begin at 9:00am.

The second ceremony, featuring degree candidates from the College of Behavioral and Health Sciences, the College of Business, the Martha Dickerson Eriksson College of Education and the College of Graduate Studies, will begin at 2:00pm. The doors to the Dunn Center will open for graduates and guests one hour prior to the beginning of each ceremony.

Two shuttles will be available to transport students, families and friends to and from the Dunn Center during the hours of 8:00am–4:00pm. Please visit www.apsu.edu/commencement for route information.

Austin Peay offers a free live webcast of each commencement ceremony. A link to the webcast will be made available within 24 hours of each ceremony. The ceremonies also will be broadcast live on Magic 91.9 WAPX-FM, a broadcast service of the Austin Peay Department of Communication.
