APSU Govs hosts Southeast Missouri Redhawks

APSU Women's BasketballClarksville, TN – Coming off a win against UT Martin, Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team returns to the court 4:30pm, Saturday, January 6th, 2018 against Southeast Missouri for their fourth league game.

The Govs put their two-game Ohio Valley Conference win streak on the line against the Redhawks.

The Governors explosive offense against the Skyhawks helped them jump out to an early 17-point lead, Wednesday, as Austin Peay shot 66.7 percent from the floor in the first period.

The Governors worked to keep the charging Skyhawks at bay during the next two periods, as Austin Peay struggled offensively, shooting a combined 3-18 in the second and third quarters.

APSU Basketball - Brianne AlexanderThe Governors patented defense forced seven turnovers and collected three steals, giving Austin Peay a one-point lead going into the final period.

Brianne Alexander and Michaela Campbell closed out the game for the Governors, scoring six points each in the final period. Campbell nailed two three-point shots to give the lead back to Austin Peay, while Alexander had two crucial offensive rebounds, as the Governors outrebounded UT Martin 8-4.

The Govs posted 25 fourth quarter points to outlast the Skyhawks, earning their second OVC win, 69-62.

APSU Basketball - Brianah FerbyAlexander led the team with 17 points and nine rebounds, with Campbell adding a career high 15 points off the bench, and Brianah Ferby posting 11 points in her third straight start for Austin Peay.

The Govs are facing a veteran Redhawks team that returns 11 players from last year’s squad, including eight upperclassmen.

Austin Peay will have to slow the quick trigger of Adrianna Murphy, who averages 12.5 points per game, and shoots above 40 percent from the floor and three-point territory.

APSU Storylines

OVC Opponents
Austin Peay leads the series 31-26, winning both meetings last year, downing the Redhawks at home, 84-74, and topping Southeast Missouri on the road, 74-64.

Bench Benefits
With Brianah Ferby moving into the starting lineup, Michaela Campbell has taken advantage of her opportunities coming off the bench. Campbell scored 15 points without a turnover against UT Martin in a season high 20 minutes of play.

Double-Digits
Three Governors are averaging double-digits through the first nine games: Alexander (17), Campbell (15) and Ferby (11).

Controlling the Effort Stats
The Govs have won the rebounding battle in both of their OVC wins this season. Austin Peay converted 22 points off of 15 Skyhawk turnovers, and had a season high 12 offensive rebounds scoring 18 second-chance points.
