City of Clarksville Departments work the Winter Storm

Clarksville Police report 22 vehicle crashes since 5:00am, Friday

City of Clarksville - Clarksville, TNClarksville, TN – City of Clarksville Government offices were closed Friday because of the winter storm that brought ice, snow and hazardous travel conditions to Middle Tennessee.

But the City’s street, transportation and public safety departments remained fully staffed and engaged to provide services and protection to Clarksville residents.

Scott Bibb, Operations Manager at Clarksville Street Department, said crews started fighting icy road conditions at 5:00am Friday and continued spreading salt throughout the day.

“We were making progress this morning against the ice, but the snow and colder temperatures set us back this afternoon. Salt works best when it’s 23 degrees or warmer, but we’ve done some good,” Bibb said. “We went as long tonight as possible, while it was doing some good. Then we’ll get back at it early Saturday morning.”

Clarksville Police Lt. Steve Warren said CPD had responded to 22 vehicle crashes inside the City since Friday at 5:00am. No major injuries were reported.

“The main problem is vehicles sliding off the road,” Warren said. “The common denominator is people driving too fast for the road conditions.”

“We have enough staffing to handle everything, and the roads are passable, but this second wave of snow this afternoon is causing the conditions to deteriorate. We are encouraging people to stay off the roads, and not to drive unless they have to.”

Clarksville Transit System Director Arthur Bing said City buses starting running on snow routes — main roads only, and avoiding areas with troublesome hills — at about noon Friday.

CTS also suspended service on the route to the Industrial Park, because of a lack of riders.

“We’ll continue to run snow routes for the rest of the day, and in the early hours Saturday morning,” Bing said. “After daylight, we’ll check the roads and go back to full routes if possible.”

CTS will give one-hour advance notice of any changes in service during the weather event, and riders should check www.rideCTS.com or the CTS Facebook page for updates.

Bing said he’d been monitoring roads and bus routes throughout the city and snowfall appeared to be heavier, and road conditions worse, in North Clarksville.

Fire Chief Mike Roberts said Clarksville Fire Rescue had no trouble or incidents to report Friday afternoon. “We’re staffed up and ready if needed.”

City offices also will be closed on Monday as scheduled to observe the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.

Clarksville Gas and Water administration and engineering offices, including the north and south customer service centers, will be closed Friday and Monday. In the event of a gas, water or sewer emergency, customers should call, 931.645.7400, or the emergency after-hours line, 931.645.0116. The Utility Billing Line, 931.645.7400, automated pay by phone; and WebConnect, www.clarksvillegw.com, online bill payment feature, will be operational.

CDE Lightband offices will be closed Friday and Monday. In the event of a service outage, customers should call 931.648.8151. Customers can go online at www.cdelightband.com/customer-service/ for service and bill paying information.
