APSU Peay Women’s Basketball heads to Nashville to face Tennessee State

APSU Women's BasketballClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team continues their four-game road swing 3:00pm, Thursday at Tennessee State.

The Govs are coming off a difficult road swing at Tennessee Tech and Jacksonville State, where first-half struggles proved to be the Achilles heel for the Governors, despite strong second-half surges.

Austin Peay shot above 60.0 percent in the third quarter against the Golden Eagles and the Gamecocks, but their comeback efforts fell short.

Brianne Alexander and Falon Baker lead the Governors offensive charge in conference play, each averaging 10.2 points per game, with Alexander shooting 47.1 percent from the floor. Keisha Gregory continues to attack the boards, pulling down 5.6 rebounds per game in conference play.

APSU Basketball - Michaela CampbellThe Governors have gotten a lift off the bench from junior transfer Michaela Campbell, who is averaging 9.7 points per game.

Campbell has scored in double digits in three of the last four games, including a career high 19-point outing against Tennessee Tech, as she led the Governors third-quarter comeback.

The Govs are shooting 40.3 percent from the floor, averaging 63.8 points per game, while pulling down 32.0 rebounds and dishing out 11.1 assists.

APSU Basketball - Brianne AlexanderThe Governors active defense is averaging eight steals per game and forcing 17.3 turnovers against conference opponents.

The Govs are facing a Tigers team that is 1-5 in Ohio Valley Conference play, but have played well at home, picking up all three wins of the season in the Gentry Center.

The Governors will have to slow the offensive production of forward Tia Wooten, who averages 20.6 points per game.

APSU Storylines

Conference Contests
Austin Peay has split the two meetings with Tennessee State in the last two seasons, with the Governors falling to the Tigers January 14th, 2016 by eight points and winning the matchup February 4th, 2017, 79-63.

Rebounding Trio
Gregory leads the team in rebounds, averaging 5.6 per game, with Alexander and Baker averaging 4.8 and 4.7 rebounds respectively during the first six conference games.

Third-Quarter Thrills
The Governors have put up strong third-quarter shooting percentages in the last two games shooting 64.3 percent in the period against the Golden Eagles and 60.0 percent against the Gamecocks.

Bench Benefits
Campbell has scored in double digits three out of the last four games, giving the Govs a needed offensive burst off the bench. Campbell posted a career high 19 points against Tennessee Tech during the Govs two-game road stretch last week.
