Dodging the Roadkill: Cabin Fever

Dodging the Roadkill - A Biker's JourneyClarksville, TN – I’ve been dealing with a major winter snowstorm here in Middle Tennessee. We’ve had a couple of inches of ice, and now a few inches of snow.

It’s treacherous.

My friends who actually LIVE in harsh winter weather, just sit back a chuckle at us southerners, and I don’t blame them. We’re just not built for this.

That means I’m dealing with cabin fever. I’ve spent the entire day watching YouTube videos about motorcycles, motorcycle trips and various motorcycle infomercials. Now I want to ride. But can’t!

I guess I should have watched music videos.

I love the people I’ve met through this blog, because I’ve watched so many of you who work on your bike through the winter. Replacing various parts and features, or adding accessories for the better weather. I’m intrigued by that. I wish I had that talent. The best I can do is clean my bike and I promise you, it’s spotless.

As I’m planning my year, this gives me an opportunity to research some of the places I want to visit. I’ve located several festivals I want to see and stories I want to write. This has been one of the true blessing of this journey I’m on is the people I meet and places I visit.

The suggestions I receive from you is such a great learning experience and to be honest, I would have NEVER discovered these things had it not been for a motorcycle, and you!

The irony of some of this though is part of my planning for the upcoming season includes visiting the very places that experience EXTREME winter conditions. Utah, South Dakota, Wyoming and all points north. I feel as though I will have a much better appreciation for these places knowing how extreme their weather gets this time of the year.

Having discovered this passion late in life gives me a better perspective of the glorious passion of being a biker. I haven’t been riding all of my life and will finish my personal journey as an old man. Riding to the end of the road with the biggest grin on my face that could ever be possible.

So in the meantime, while the winter weather bears down on me, I’ll just be patient, do more research and look forward to a time when I can throttle up and head out. It’s a real blessing to be able to appreciate all of this in a way that a younger “me” would have never done.
