Austin Peay Basketball’s Averyl Ugba named APSU Athlete of the Week

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s basketball senior Averyl Ugba has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

For the third time this season, Ugba snared not only adidas® Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week but Player of the Week as well, putting on a show by averaging 28.0 ppg and 12.5 rpg in victories against UT Martin and Southeast Missouri last week.

Against UT Martin, Ugba led all scorers with 28 points and a career-best 17 rebounds, tied for second-most in a single game this season among OVC players.

In the process, he became the first Governor since Chris Horton (January 21st-23rd, 2016) with back-to-back contests of at least 15 points and 15 rebounds.

In Saturday’s contest against the Redhawks, Ugba scored 14 points in the game’s opening 3:11, setting the tone in a 96-81 Austin Peay victory. He also chipped in four more points during the Governors game-defining 15-2 run midway through the second half.

The Silver Spring, Maryland native has now won three OVC Player of the Week honors and seven Newcomer of the Week honors as a Governor, including at least a share of six of the last seven Newcomer awards. These are the 14th and 15th honors garnered by Austin Peay from the league this season, with Ugba accounting for 10 by himself.

He’s the first Gov with three or more Player of the Week honors in the same season since Wesley Channels (2009-10) and the first with seven or more Newcomer awards since the conference began recognizing the week’s top newcomer during the 1985-86 season.

APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Wednesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included

  • Senior forward Brianne Alexander, of the women’s basketball team, averaged 18.5 ppg and 6.0 rpg on 57.1 percent (12-of-21) shooting, including a career-best 26-point performance in Austin Peay’s road victory against Southeast Missouri.
  • Junior Savannah Amato, of the track and field team, won the pole vault at the Don DeNoon Invitational by breaking the four-meter barrier for the second time in three weeks, running away with the event with a 4.00m (13-1.50) mark. It marked her season’s third indoor win and the eighth indoor triumph of her Austin Peay career.
