Vial, of Reno, Nevada, triumphed in his Governors debut and combined with Brett Newberg and Kyle Wilson to post a 2-0 shutout of Illinois in St. Louis, Missouri. Vial’s 7.1 innings of work saw him scatter five hits and a walk while striking out three.

The Fighting Illini could not string together hits against the Govs righty with Vial holding hitters to 0-for-9 batting with runners on base and 0-for-6 with a runner in scoring position. His performance allowed Austin Peay to start a season 3-0 for the first time since the 2012 OVC Championship campaign.

Vial shared the opening week’s pitching honor with Morehead State’s Dalton Stambaugh, who pitched seven innings in a shutout win against Ball State. Tennessee Tech’s John Ham and Jacksonville State’s Trent Simpson shared the league’s Player of the Week honor.

Austin Peay returns to action when it hosts Southern Illinois in a 3:00pm, Tuesday contest that will open its 2018 home schedule.
