Clarksville Police Department creates “Exchange Zone”

Clarksville Police Department - CPDClarksville, TN – Online transactions and internet sales have increased significantly as the public turns to the use of more convenient methods for shopping.  Along with the increase of technology and internet related transactions, there has been an increase in consumer fraud.

The Clarksville Police Department has seen thefts and robberies associated with in-person transactions on the rise.

In an effort to better serve our community and establish an area which would be safer to conduct in-person transactions, CPD is establishing an “Exchange Zone” at the 211 Cunningham Lane precinct.

It can be used to facilitate legal transactions such as internet exchange of goods or child custody swaps.  There will be one conspicuously marked parking spot designated for the “Exchange Zone”

Even though officers do not get involved or actively monitor the transactions, the Exchange Zone will be well-lit and have video surveillance, hopefully deterring fraud, theft, and other criminal activity.  It should afford a safer option then meeting in an isolated, business parking lot with someone you’ve never met before.

If the person you are meeting doesn’t want to exchange items at the police department, it’s a good indicator you shouldn’t meet with that person at all. While Exchange zones are not a guarantee for a safe transaction, they create an environment which reduces the potential hazards associated with these types of transactions.

Officers will not act as witnesses for transactions in the zone and do not give legal advice. Also, officers will not settle civil disputes related to any transaction and the Clarksville Police Department is not responsible for the value, authenticity or legitimacy of the transactions.

Common sense should prevail and you should follow basic safety practices.  Make sure the transaction happens in a public place and during daylight hours, if possible.  Try not to conduct the transaction alone.  Trust your instincts, and leave the area if something appears awry.
