City of Clarksville Tylertown Road plans draws large crowd

City of Clarksville - Clarksville, TNClarksville, TN – More than 150 residents turned out Thursday evening to hear about the City’s plan to improve and widen Tylertown Raod and Oakland Road in Northeast Clarksville.

The proposal calls for Tylertown Road to be widened from Trenton Road to the City limits just past Oakland Road, and Oakland will be widened from Tylertown Road to Spring Creek.

Citizens invited comment on Tylertown and Oakland roads preliminary design.

The project will cover about 3 miles of roadway.

The meeting was hosted by the Clarksville Street Department and HDR, project consultants. Brian Trotter, HDR project manager, showed the crowd a presentation with current and projected daily traffic counts along with various options for the project.

Trotter said the project is in the evaluation and planning phase, and decisions on whether, when and how to expand the roads had not yet been made.

He said he reasons for considering improvements now include:

  • Dealing with current overcrowding on the two roads and inevitable increases in traffic.
  • Improving safety and decreasing crash potential.
  • Addressing “hot spot” intersections that cause congestion and delays.
  • Providing bike lanes and sidewalks to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety.

The area around Tylertown and Oakland roads was mostly rural farmland when it was annexed into Clarksville in the 1990s. Since then large subdivisions have been developed, bringing more residents and traffic. Some land fronting the roads, especially a large tract along Tylertown Road near Trenton Road, is zoned for commercial use and could create even more traffic in the future.

Traffic data shows Tylertown Road had a daily traffic count of 1,400 in 2000, and that has grown to 7,690 today. The daily traffic on Tylertown is expected to continue to grow to 15,190 trips a day in 2040. Traffic today on Oakland Road is about 5,400 vehicles a day.

The presentation offered proposed options for the number of lanes and for various features the project might include, such bike lanes and sidewalks in the road widening project.

Citizens were invited to break into small groups led by the consulting team and Clarksville Street Department staff to get a close look at design options, offer comments and ask questions.
