Blanchfield Army Hospital - BACH - Fort Campbell KYFort Campbell, KY – Social workers on Fort Campbell are helping to celebrate Social Work Month in March with a variety of activities centered on this year’s theme, “Social Workers: Leaders. Advocates. Champions.”

“There are approximately 100 social workers currently serving the installation. It’s a fast growing profession with clinical social workers serving as the largest group of mental health providers in the country,” said Capt. Marquita Barr, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker-Associate assigned to the installation’s Substance Abuse Disorder Care Clinic “Social workers are trained to look at situations in a holistic way, helping bring together people and communities to find ways to address pressing individual, group and societal issues.”

In addition to federal employee and contractor social workers, social work is a career field in the Army Medical Service Corps. On Fort Campbell there are active-duty and Reserve Soldiers providing social work services along with their civilian counterparts.

Their job duties include clinical counseling, crisis intervention, disaster relief, critical event debriefing, teaching and training and policy development.

“They are located in many places on post including the hospital, Family Advocacy Program, SUDCC, as individual behavioral health consultants, in schools on post as Military and Family Life Consultants, and in each brigade on the installation,” said Barr.

Barr and her fellow social workers have organized several events throughout the month of March to raise awareness of the services they provide to Soldiers and families on post.

There will be an information table in the A-lobby of the hospital March 1st-5th and at Shaw Physical Fitness Facility March 23rd.

A Social Worker Luncheon is scheduled for March 16th at 11:30am at Cole Park Commons. This is a networking opportunity for current and prospective social workers, support staff and leaders.

Social work interns are collecting new household items for a domestic violence shelter March 1st-14th. Items may be donated at FAP, SUDCC and Embedded Behavioral Health units. Items needed are bedding, pots and pans, cookware, cleaning supplies and pajamas. A complete list and more information can be found by visiting the information table.

“During Social Work Month, we hope you will take time to learn more about the profession and support the work of social workers in improving the lives on individuals and families and our society,” said Barr.
