Fort Campbell to test Wireless Emergency Alert on Integrated Public Alert and Warning System on April 3rd

Fort Campbell Emergency Operations Center

Fort Campbell KY - 101st Airborne DivisionFort Campbell, KY – The Fort Campbell Installation Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will run a Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) test on the Integrated Public Alerting and Warning System (IPAWS) on Tuesday, April 3rd, 2018 at 1:00pm, weather permitting.

The test message will display on mobile devices as an “Emergency Alert.” The body of the text message will state the following: “Test. Test. This is only a Test from Fort Campbell Emergency Operations Center.”

The WEA is a one-way message from IPAWS and is similar to a text message. WEA messages are 90 characters or less, and will show the type and time of the alert, any action you should take, and the agency issuing the alert.

The messages are free – no charges for air time, message fees, etc. – and not a service someone needs to sign up for.

Not all mobile devices (smartphones or flip phones) are WEA enabled. A mobile device must be WEA enabled to receive the Emergency Alert Messages. WEA messages will only be used when there is an imminent threat to the Fort Campbell area such as a tornado warning.

Messages will often refer individuals to the Fort Campbell Facebook page, www.facebook.com/FortCampbell, for more details and updates. The service uses cell phone towers on Fort Campbell. Those off post, but close by in parts of Montgomery County, Christian County, Trigg County and Stewart County, are likely to also receive the messages if their phone is using a cell phone tower on Fort Campbell at the time.

If the weather does not permit testing, an alternate test date has been scheduled for Thursday, April 5th at 1:00pm.
