Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team earned a non-conference win over Saint Louis, Tuesday, at the Governors Tennis Courts.
Claudia Yanes Garcia was rested for the upcoming conference matches next week as the Govs took the court with only five active players.
The singles matches came first in the match, as normally the doubles portion of the match is first.
In the end, the Govs (6-6, 2-1 OVC) did not need the doubles, as they swept every contested match en route to a 4-1 victory.
Lidia Yanes Garcia remained unbeaten at No. 1 singles in the spring with a win over Cassie McKenzie (6-4, 6-0). Fabulous freshman Fabienne Schmidt also collected a win at No. 2 singles and her German countrywoman Helena Kuppig easily tamed her opponent at No. 3 singles.
Ana Albertson moved up to No. 4 singles as a result of Claudia’s rest and earned a gritty straight-set win. Brittney Covington won the first set and was leading early in the second, but the match went unfinished due to the Govs having already clinched the match. The Billikens (6-9) did pick up a win at No. 6 singles due to forfeit, their lone point of the match.
The Govs have two huge road conference matches still to come this week, the first of at Southeast Missouri, 2:00pm, Friday and then traveling to UT Martin, 12:00pm, Saturday.
