The Govs (10-7, 6-2 OVC) knew beating the Racers (14-6, 8-0 OVC) and Eastern Kentucky Friday would give them the Ohio Valley Conference regular season crown, while Murray State came in knowing a win would set up a de facto championship game against Eastern Kentucky for the OVC regular season title.

Both teams had strong starts at the start of doubles matches. Ana Albertson and Helena Kuppig went up a quick two games at No. 1 doubles, but the Murray State team of Claire Chang and Jeanne Masson clawed back to tie the match at 3-3.

The next court over, the Racers’ No. 2 doubles team won to give the early edge to the Racers in doubles. Fabienne Schmidt and Brittney Covington took the lead in their match at 4-3, but the Racers came back to win at No. 1 doubles and take the doubles point, as the match went unfinished.

Singles started out promising for the Govs. Claudia Yanes Garcia is officially back and hitting her best form of the season, defeating Aarja Chakraborty at No. 3 singles (6-3, 6-2). However, the Racers hit back with their own pair of twins, as their duo of Anja and Sara Loncarevic won at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to bring Murray State to within a point of clinching the match.

Kuppig won the first set of her match at No. 4 singles, but ultimately fell in three sets as Murray State claimed the match. Lidia Yanes Garcia continued her fantastic season, winning in comeback fashion over three sets to improve to 16-0 at No. 1 singles matches this season.

The Govs will be either the third or fourth seed in the OVC Tournament, but still have one more regular season match left as they travel to Eastern Kentucky for a 9:00am start, Friday.
