Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team starts its journey for an Ohio Valley Conference championship, 11:00am, Friday, April 20th against Eastern Kentucky at the Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville.
While the match is slated for 11:00am, it will take place once the Jacksonville State and Eastern Illinois match is finished, but it will not start prior to 10:00am.
The Govs (2-16, 1-4 OVC) will go into the match with a wealth of knowledge about the Colonels (7-18, 3-3 OVC), having just played them last week in the last match of the regular season. The Colonels won that match, albeit very narrowly, with a final score of 4-3.
The Govs came out hot in the match last weekend, winning the doubles point to go up 1-0, but unfortunately could not keep the momentum going in singles. Almantas Ozelis and Aleh Drobysh, the two most experienced players on the team, won both matches against EKU. The duo teamed up to win at No. 1 doubles, before each won in singles in straight sets (Ozelis at No. 1 singles, Drobysh at No. 3 singles).
The Govs have not made it out of the first round of the OVC Tournament since the 2014-15 season, where they lost the championship match to Eastern Kentucky. The winner of the match goes on to play Belmont, who earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament last week.
