The community is invited to Tuesday’s Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) Opening Celebration, which will be held in the executive classroom at 317 College Street.

There will be light refreshments and speeches by Sharita Goodrich, APSU’s new VUB director, and several alumni of the VUB program.

“People can start visiting the office right away,” Kelly Pitts, APSU grants specialist, said. “The staff is excited and ready to begin seeing participants. TRiO works, and this program is going to touch a lot of lives.”

The VUB office is located in room 104 of the McReynolds Building on the Clarksville campus, and it will serve 125 veterans from Fort Campbell and Houston County, Montgomery County, Robertson County and Stewart County. The VUB program was developed to assist low-income veterans and veterans who are first-generation college students in applying for a post-secondary education, finding and submitting financial aid applications, and enrolling in an institution of higher education.

The program provides counselors and mentors to help these individuals successfully navigate the different issues that arise when pursuing a college education. The VUB is a free service for veterans and does not provide assistance to active-duty military.
