Nashville Sounds

Nashville SoundsMemphis, TN – James Naile dazzled on the mound and a pair of three-run innings from the offense lifted the Nashville Sounds past the Memphis Redbirds 8-3 on Mother’s Day.

Memphis scattered seven hits off Naile in his seven innings of work, his third seven-inning start of the season. He allowed two runs and matched a season-high with seven strikeouts while not walking any Redbirds. Jorge Mateo drove in a trio of runs for the third time this season and Sheldon Neuse collected his first three-hit game of the season, matching a career-high.

The Redbirds capitalized on a fielding mistake by the Sounds in the third inning to open the scoring.

Rangel Ravelo hit a dribbler to Neuse at third base whose throw was off line and drew first baseman Nick Martini off the bag.

Martini’s tag on Ravelo was deemed to be late and an infield single was awarded to Ravelo. Oscar Mercado’s sacrifice fly brought Ravelo into score the opening run of the game and Tyler O’Neill’s RBI double added to the Redbirds’ lead.

The Sounds cut the lead in half in the fifth as Neuse doubled and swiped third base. He then scored on a Dustin Garneau sacrifice fly. The one run deficit turned into a two-run lead two innings later. Anthony Garcia’s leadoff double got the seventh inning rolling. An RBI single from Neuse and a two-run double from Mateo catapulted the Sounds into a 4-2 lead.

Memphis’ Tyler O’Neill and Nashville’s Josh Phegley traded home runs in the bottom of the eighth and top of the ninth innings respectively. Mateo and Martini each drove in runs with base hits in the ninth inning.

The Sounds and Redbirds continue their four-game series Monday morning. Right-hander Frankie Montas (1-3, 4.18) starts for Nashville against right-hander Dakota Hudson (3-1, 3.03) for Memphis. First pitch is scheduled for 11:05am.
