Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – This summer, Austin Peay State University’s Foy Fitness and Recreation Center is offering a new summer camp for teens—Govs Outdoors (GO) Teen Camp.

The day camp, which furthers APSU’s commitment to the surrounding community, focuses on getting teens outdoors and offers activities ranging from hiking and biking, to rock climbing and caving, all of which are offered in the Clarksville area.

The camp is open to teens, ages 12-15, from 8:00am-4:00pm, Monday through Friday. Weekly sessions start June 4th, and run through June 29th, 2018.

Each day the teens will travel to different locations around the greater Clarksville area for the day’s activities. Depending on the weather, activities could include hiking and swimming at Land Between the Lakes, climbing at King’s Bluff, paddling on the Red River, mountain biking at Rotary Park, kayak roll clinics in the Foy pool, caving at one of the many local caves and some environmental education of local water hydrology and ecology.

Campers will start and end each day at Austin Peay’s Foy Center. Camp space is limited to 12 campers each week.

“This camp offers what most camps in the area don’t—an opportunity for teens to find their passion for the outdoors,” Clayton Sheehan, program coordinator of Govs Outdoors, said. “Clarksville has so many outdoor recreation opportunities that are often overlooked. This camp is a perfect way for teens to find new hobbies and learn how to do them safely. When people think of outdoor recreation, they immediately think of Chattanooga or Knoxville. But, within Clarksville, we have climbing, mountain biking, paddling and hiking. We should be encouraging our teens to learn about and take advantage of the opportunities that are in their backyard.”

The new GO Teen Camp is a part of the Govs Outdoors (GO) program with Austin Peay. GO is offered at the Foy, and it takes APSU students exploring all over the region and across the U.S. Each semester, GO offers trips and workshops that promote outdoor recreation for APSU students. This past semester, GO traveled to Big Bend National Park in south Texas; Moab, Utah; and North Carolina. Trips and workshops are at a minimal cost and provide educational components that are all run by student trip leaders.

“The teens today are future Govs,” Sheehan said. “We’re hoping to continue to build the outdoor culture around Clarksville so that students are excited about coming to APSU because of all it has to offer, both in and out of the classroom.”
