Clarksville Police Department Scam of the Day for July 8th, 2018

Clarksville Police Department - CPDClarksville, TN – The Clarksville Police Department is going to make the public aware of some of the scams that they receive daily. CPD knows there are an unlimited amounts of scams, but they are going to try and put out the ones where people have actually suffered a loss.

A 73 year old man was bilked out of $24,000 through a scam. The man received a call from an individual named “Mike” who said he worked for Norton Security and told the man his IP address had been hacked.

Scams

The victim was referred to another individual named “Norman Jackson” that told him multiple IP addresses had been hacked and he would have to pay to fix each one.

Over the course of a week, the victim bought $24,000 worth of Google Play Cards and provided the scratch off numbers to the individual on the phone. The victim realized it was a scam when the bank called and questioned the large withdrawal.

Now on a positive note, we’ve been made aware there have been a couple of individuals at businesses that helped or tried to help some customers not be victims of scams.

One person came into a store to buy green dot cards because the IRS said to send money or go to jail. The clerk was able to enlighten the person which helped avert the person being a victim of the well known scam.

Another person went into a business to buy a money order to purchase some furniture over the internet. The clerk asked if they knew the person and suggested that it might be good to do some additional research. But, the person ignored the clerks suggestion and ended up losing $900.00.
