Clarksville Police releases name of Man who jumped into Red River and Drowned

Clarksville Police Department - CPDClarksville, TN – On the night of July 24th, 2018 Clarksville Police Officers made a traffic stop on a Jeep with a brake light out. The driver jumped out, ran to the Red River, jumped in, and drowned.

The name of the man who jumped into the Red River is Eugene Bompers, age 39, of Clarksville, TN.

Around 10:35pm, the 39 year old man jumped into the river in the area behind Waffle House and started to swim across the river.

About halfway across, the man went into distress and yelled for help. Officers encouraged him to swim back toward them and went into the water to assist, but were unable to reach the man before he submerged under the water and never resurfaced.

Clarksville Fire Rescue and Montgomery County Search and Rescue located the man in the water, deceased, about 11:38pm.

Bompers had gotten stuck in the muck at the bottom of Red River.
