Nashville Sounds rally late to beat Colorado Springs Sky Sox 9-7 in Extra Innings

Nashville Sounds

Nashville SoundsColorado Springs, CO – The Nashville Sounds came from behind to shock the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 9-7 in 10 innings Sunday afternoon to move their winning streak to 13 games. The victory completed a third straight series sweep for the Sounds.

Down to their final strike in the top of the ninth inning and runners on the corners, Jorge Mateo lined a base hit to center field to even the score at 6-6. The Sounds then scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning thanks to a Steve Lombardozzi RBI single and a two-run double from Anthony Garcia to provide enough of a cushion to see out the victory.

Nashville starter Jesus Luzardo was lifted from the game after just 3 1/3 innings of work, his shortest outing of the season.

The prized prospect yielded four runs on six hits including a two-run home run to the final batter he faced, Dylan Moore.

After the two teams traded zeroes in the first two innings, the Sounds gave Luzardo a lead to work with in the third. Nashville loaded the bases with no outs. Dustin Fowler ripped a two-run double to right field to put the Sounds on the board. A Garcia RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Sheldon Neuse added to Nashville’s lead.

Colorado Springs responded with a run in the fourth. Keon Broxton doubled, swiped third base, and scored on an infield single from Christian Bethancourt. It was the first run allowed at the Triple-A level by Luzardo. He then allowed three more in the fourth before giving way to reliever Eric Jokisch. Luzardo allowed three hits in the inning including a two-run home run to Moore.

With the Sounds on top 5-4 the Sky Sox threatened to tie the game in the sixth inning as the first two batters reached base. Jokisch then induced a 5-4-3 triple play to Moore. It was Nashville’s first triple play turned since July 25, 2015 also at Colorado Springs. The triple play was the first one turned in the Pacific Coast League this season.

Nashville found itself in an unfamiliar position after the seventh inning. After not trailing in any of the last six games, the Sounds found themselves in a 6-5 deficit as Colorado Springs plated a pair of runs in the seventh. The Sounds were undeterred as they tied the game in the ninth and finished it off in the 10th.

The Sounds return home to First Tennessee Park Monday for a four-game series against the Round Rock Express. Right-hander James Naile (7-10, 4.54) starts for Nashville against right-hander Chris Jensen (1-2, 6.33) starts for Round Rock. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
