APSU Women's GolfLexington, KY – Despite a charge up the leaderboard from an Ohio Valley Conference foe, Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s golf held on for a runner-up finish at the Morehead State-hosted Greenbrier Invitational at Greenbrier Country Club, Tuesday, September 18th, 2018.

The Govs runner-up finish is their best since Amy McCollum took over as head coach last spring.

Austin Peay shot 936 (319-304-313) to fend off Belmont and UNC Asheville, both of whom shot 940. Cincinnati won the event at 907 (310-304-293), while host Morehead State rounded out the top-five at 955.

“Really proud of the grit and determination our girls displayed this week in the tough conditions,” McCollum said. “Because of all the rain on Monday, the course played much longer and the greens played much slower than we were used to. The wedge work we put in the last few weeks is really starting to pay off for us.”

Freshman Taylor Dedmen’s final-round 73 gave her a share of fifth-place with a 229 (79-77-73) in just her second collegiate tournament. She’s the first Austin Peay freshman to earn a top-five finish since Taylor Goodley took third at the 2015 F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate as an individual and the first to earn back-to-back top-20s to open her career since Monica Storey in 2005.

Dedmen’s 73 was tied for Tuesday’s second-best round, behind only individual champion Rikke Svejgaard of Kentucky.

Freshman Shelby Darnell joined Goodley in the top-20 for this event; her final-round 79 placed her 14th with a 231 aggregate (77-75-79) but belied her tournament-best 4.75 par-5 stroke average and tournament-high eight birdies. Goodley checked in at 20th with a 237 (83-73-81).

Junior Meghann Stamps fell just outside the top-20, tying for 22nd with a 239 (80-79-80); she tied Dedmen for the team-high with 35 pars and equaled Darnell in par-3 scoring at 3.08/hole, second-lowest average in the tournament.

Senior Reagan Greene rounded out the Austin Peay lineup with a 251 (86-81-84) to finish 33rd.

The Govs get back to work Monday, September 24th at Jacksonville State’s Chris Banister Classic in Glencoe, Alabama. The two-day, 54-hole event will be held at Silver Lakes Golf Course.
