APSU Volleyball hosts Murray State, Morehead State this week

APSU Women's VolleyballClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s (APSU) volleyball team begins a four-match homestand with two Week 6 contests. The Governors host Murray State in a 6:00pm, Tuesday, September 25th contest that will serve as the kickoff for the 2018-19 Heritage Bank Battle of the Border.

Morehead State then visits the Dunn Center for a 2:00pm Saturday matchup.

2018 APSU Volleyball - Ginny GerigThe Govs are one of four teams unbeaten in OVC play after the league schedule’s opening week. Along with the Govs and Morehead State, Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee Tech opened with unblemished OVC records.

Austin Peay leads all OVC teams in kills per set (14.46), attack percentage (.246), assists (13.60) and overall win percentage (.857) entering Week 6.

Junior libero Ginny Gerig awas named OVC Defensive Player of the Week after her impressive weekend that saw her average 6.14 digs per set. She began the week with a 10-dig first-set performance at Southeast Missouri, finishing the match with 23 digs. Gerig followed that with 20 digs at UT Martin.

2018 APSU Volleyball - Cecily GableSenior Cecily Gable led the Govs offense last week with 28 kills (4.0/set) while hitting .235. She was particularly impressive in the fourth set at UT Martin, recording five consecutive kills in a 6-0 run that broke open the set.

Senior setter Kristen Stucker has been the OVC Setter of the Week three times this season.Last week, she led the Govs to a .219 team attack percentage while averaging 11.14 assists per set. Stucker also recorded her sixth and seventh double-doubles of the season.

Head coach Taylor Mott became the first APSU head coach since 1992 to earn OVC Coach of the Year honors in 2017. She notched her 400th career win and became the second head coach to record 100 wins at APSU during the 2017 season.

The Governors were picked second in the OVC’s preseason poll of coaches and sports information directors.

It is the second consecutive season APSU has been picked second in the poll.

However, APSU was the top pick of more than half the voters in that preseason poll.

The Govs 14 first-place votes outpaced preseason favorite Murray State’s 10 first-place votes.

Stuckers’ Upcoming Climb

2018 APSU Volleyball - Kristen StuckerEntering this week with 3,993 assists, Stucker needs seven assists to become the 4th Govs setter with 4,000 career assists.

Looking further ahead, she needs 131 assists to move into third-place all-time and is 893 assists from breaking the Govs all-time record.

Gerig Lifts 1,000th Dig

Junior libero Ginny Gerig became the 20th Govs player to record 1,000 career digs, reaching the milestone against Northern Kentucky, September 8th. She has since moved up to 16th on the Govs career digs list, with 1,118 digs. She needs 49 digs to leap frog into 14th on the list.

Early OVC Haul

In addition to their 10 all-tourney honors, the Governors have accumulated eight OVC weekly honors in 2018.

Kristen Stucker has won three of the first four Setter of the Week honors while Brooke Moore and Cecily Gable each have nabbed one of the four Offensive Player of the Week nods. on the defensive side, both freshman Jaymeson Kinley and junior Ginny Gerig have earned a defensive honor from the league.
