APSU Volleyball sweeps Morehead State

APSU Women's VolleyballClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s (APSU) volleyball saw three hitters post double-digit kills and four players find double-digit dig territory in a three-set (25-21, 25-14, 27-25) Ohio Valley Conference sweep of Morehead State, Saturday, at the Winfield Dunn Center.

Austin Peay (14-2, 4-0 OVC) dominated the first two sets, trailing only briefly in the first before pulling away and winning the second wire-to-wire.

The Governors had a tougher go of it in the third set, but senior Kristen Stucker gave the Govs their fourth match-point opportunity with a kill and senior Cecily Gable end the contest with a service ace to keep APSU atop the OVC standings.

2018 APSU Volleyball - Brooke MooreMorehead State (12-5, 3-1 OVC) held a five-point lead in the third set after Taylor Hodges posted three straight service aces, forcing an Austin Peay timeout.

The Govs would rally back to tie the set at 16-16 before building its only two-point lead at 23-21 to set up the final stretch.

Sophomore Brooke Moore led the Govs offense with 16 kills and a .267 attack percentage with junior Jenna Panning and senior Cecily Gable each adding 10 kills. Austin Peay posted an impressive 48 kills in the three-set affair and a .229 team attack percentage.

2018 APSU Volleyball - Ginny GerigSenior Ginny Gerig paced APSU’s defense with 15 digs, Gable chipping in 12 while Stucker and freshman Jaymeson Kinley each had 11 digs.

That effort helped limit Morehead State to 29 kills and a .126 attack percentage in the match.

Olivia Lohmeier led Morehead State with nine kills.

Austin Peay continues its four-match homestand when it hosts Eastern Illinois in a 7:00pm, Friday, October 5th contest at the Dunn Center.

Set-By-Set

SET 1, Govs Win 25-21
Austin Peay lost the set’s opening point, the only time it would trail in the frame. Moore provide her first kill to tie the set and then provided a service ace to put the Govs up 3-1.

Morehead State would tie the set again at 3-3 but could not take the lead and was unable to do so when it tied the frame at 7-7 and 14-14.

Gable would provide the kill that put APSU ahead for good at 15-14 and Austin Peay would build a four-point lead at 22-18 that it held to the set’s end.

The Governors would score the first three points to open the second set and never trailed.

Austin Peay pushed its lead to six points at 11-5, nine points at 18-9 and closed the frame with four consecutive points on Nina Korfhage’s serve as part of a set-ending 5-0 run.

SET 3, Govs Win
Morehead State gathered itself in the third and battled Austin Peay to 16 ties and five lead changes.

The Eagles appeared to gain all the momentum with a 5-0 run that included three consecutive aces by Taylor Hodges to force an APSU timeout at 15-10.

2018 APSU Volleyball - Cecily GableBut the timeout proved crucial as the Govs scored four straight points out of the stoppage to get back within a point, 15-14.

Austin Peay tied the set at 16-16 and the teams traded points all the way to 21-21.

There, Austin Peay scored back-to-back points to take a 23-21 lead and got its first match point chance at 24-22.

But Morehead State fended off three match point chances before the Govs ended the match with a Cecily Gable service ace.

APSU Govs, Notably

Govs-Tigers At The Top
Austin Peay and Tennessee State will finish the second week of league play sharing the top spot in the standings at 4-0.

A faceoff between the Govs and Tigers will have to wait a week when Austin Peay travels to Tennessee State for an October 13th contest.

Moore On Fire
Moore’s 16-kill outing was her second-highest output this season and 11th consecutive double-digit kill outing, dating back to a September 1st contest against Stetson.  

The outside hitter has hit better than .200 in nine of those matches and in each of the last three contests.
