Customs House Museum Exhibits

The Art of Ashley Mintz
October 2nd – October 31st | Planters Bank Peg Harvill Gallery

Nashville artist Ashely Mintz creates colorful mixed media pieces that have exhibited in places such as the Tennessee State Museum and Tennessee State University. Mintz says of her work, “Art, whether it is creating it or enjoying the works of others, is a very healing experience for me. Art is so personal, yet it can speak to anyone. Being an introvert, art has been the thing that has given me a voice.” This exhibition is sponsored in part by Nashville Arts Magazine.

Camille Engel: Her Home Tennessee
October 16th – January 2nd | Crouch Gallery

American contemporary realist oil painter Camille Engel is internationally acclaimed and known for her use of rich colors, textures, and intricate detail. This award-winning artist has created a series of paintings themed around the Tennessee State symbols.

In conjunction with the exhibit, the Museum will display 13 student works of art created within the same theme and chosen through a juried process, featuring work from grades 2nd – 10th. The student art competition is sponsored by Jerry’s Artarama and Chromatics.

This exhibit includes clay models, molds, wax castings, and finished bronze sculpture, along with photographs that help to explain the process that was invented in China over 10,000 years ago. Finished works include many of LeQuire’s small-scale figure studies. The exhibition promotes the value of traditional practices: studying the human figure and working from life.

Friday Mornings in October: Fall into Fun
Ages 2 – 5 | October 5th, 12th, 19th, & 26th
10:30am–11:30am | Explorers’ Landing

Get “hands-on” as you explore a Leaf Sensory Bin and discover the different shapes, textures, and colors of Autumn. Among the leaves, search for seed pods, small twigs, pieces of bark, and pinecones: can you help the squirrel find some acorns? Count how many you can find.

Look at the items up-close under a microscope or magnifying glass; what do you see? Play a matching game where you match what you find in the Leaf Sensory Bin to a picture of that item. Make an Autumn Tree craft to take home.

10:30am–11:30am & 2:00pm–3:00pm | In the Family Art Studio

Become a “Jr. Scientist” in this drop-in program. Be prepared to get messy! Explore and play with a bowl of green slime: is it a liquid or a solid? Observe a chemical reaction as you combine baking soda and vinegar: what happens, and why?

Investigate pumpkins: get tactile as you feel around the inside of a pumpkin; pick-up pumpkins and predict their weight and size, then check if your predictions are correct by using a scale and a measuring tape.

October 9-12 | 8:30am–11:30pm or 1:00pm–4:00pm
For students in grades 1-3, 4-5, and 6-8

Customs House Museum Free Art Classes for Students set for October 9th-12th.

The Customs House Museum & Cultural Center recently received a generous Arts Engagement in American Communities grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. This funding allows us to offer a series of free art-making experiences called ART 4 US that will begin with these classes.

This project is a new community engagement initiative based on the premise that exposure to the visual arts can and should be an edifying encounter for anyone, regardless of skill level, background, age, economic standing, or other perceived barriers to the enjoyment of art. The hands-on experience of making art is an important project component. During 4 days this fall break, we will offer morning and afternoon workshops led by artists that focus on 4 different media: drawing, painting, 3-D and multi-media.

**Participants must register on-site at the Museum. A separate enrollment form is required for each participant at the time of registration.

For complete program information, please see our policy information on our website: www.customshousemuseum.org/educational-public-programs/art-4-us-fall-break

MONSTERS: Show me how to draw one!
Family Art Studio | Sunday, October 21st| 1:00pm–4:00pm

The truth is, nobody, not even the most famous artist, can tell you how to draw a monster. Whether cute and cuddly ones like the loveable Cookie Monster or the creepy ones like the Creature from the Black Lagoon, they exist only in our imagination.

Come draw or make the monster that’s in your head, be it friendly or scary. Maybe you would like to dress up as your monster for Halloween!

For more information contact Ms. Sue at sue@customshousemuseum.org or 931.648.5780.
