He served in the U.S. Army’s 5th Special Forces Group in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, from 1991 until 2015. In December of 2010, he was involved in an IED explosion while conducting operations in Afghanistan. Both of his legs were amputated above the knee and his right arm was severely mangled.

Following his recovery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington, D.C., he returned home to Tennessee with his family in 2012. The CW3 (R) Scott Schroeder Scholarship Endowment was created in recognition of his bravery and perseverance while overcoming the many obstacles in his life.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership from Mayfield University and a master’s degree in business administration from Bethel University. Since 1992, she has worked as the executive secretary to the commander for the 5th Special Forces Group at Fort Campbell.

During that time, she has assisted in the transition of 14 individual commanders, their command chief warrant officers and command sergeants major. The Mrs. Joyce Luster Scholarship Endowment was established to honor her years of civilian service, as well as her genuine concern and compassion for all those in the 5th Special Forces Group, their families and the Fort Campbell community.

“Service and scholarship are pillars of our chapter,” APSU Military Alumni Chapter President Joe Shakeenab said. “We build scholarship endowments to benefit our military students and their families here at APSU. Our efforts will complement their educational journey.”
