APSU SoftballClarksville, TNCarly Mattson’s third inning grand slam proved to be the difference for the Red Team, Wednesday at Joe & Cathi Maynard Stadium-Cheryl Holt Field, as it tied Austin Peay State University’s (APSU) annual softball Fall World Series at one game each with a 5-1 victory over the Black Team.

The Red Team had loaded the bases on a walk, an error and a base hit by Natalie Schilling to give them their first scoring chance on the contest in the bottom of the third inning, with two outs.

Morgan Rackel would break the scoreless deadlock with single through the left side of the infield to score Katelyn Smith with the games first run and bringing up Mattson.

Mattson would fall behind early in the count but blasted a 1-2 pitch off the scoreboard in left-center field for a grand slam home run to extend the Red Team’s lead to 5-0.

That would be all the runs that the Red Team would need, as Morgan Rackel and Kelly Mardones combined to throw a four hitter, with the Black Team’s only run coming in the top of the sixth inning coming on a solo home run by Danielle Liermann.

Kelsey Gross would also pick up two hits for the Black Team, while striking out eight in her complete-game pitching effort, with Katie Keen recording the other hit in the loss.

The two teams will play the deciding game of their World Series Thursday, 4:00pm, at Maynard Stadium-Cheryl Holt Field.
