APSU BaseballClarksville, TN – Senior left-hander Brett Newberg tossed four scoreless innings in a start and then supplied a solo home run to lead the Red Team past the Black Squad, 9-1, in the opening game of Austin Peay State University (APSU) baseball’s Red-Black World Series at Raymond C. He would allow a double in the first, a single in the third and a single in the fourth but worked around the base hits each time. At the plate, Newberg went 2-for-4 with a RBI and scored three times. He would reach base in the third inning on a wild pitch and later scored on another wild pitch.

Newberg doubled in the fourth inning and scored on third baseman Ryan Kouba‘s bases-loaded walk. He would then tack on a leadoff home run in the sixth to complete his day.

After two scoreless frames, the Red Team supplied Newberg with all the run support he would need courtesy a four-run third inning. Second baseman Michael Carey, left fielder Griffin Rivers and shortstop Garrett Kueber provided three consecutive base hits, Kueber’s double driving in the game’s first run. Two runs would score on wild pitches in the frame, including Newberg, and center fielder Garrett Spain would tack on a run with a single.

First baseman Andrew Flaherty added a run with a leadoff home run in the fourth inning. Three batters later, the Red Team’s lead would grow again as right fielder Parker Phillips hit a two-run home run. Kouba’s bases-loaded walk would push the lead to 8-0 after four innings.

The Black Squad was held in check by Newberg and relievers Luke Brown and Josh Rye who combined for 10 strikeouts. The Black Squad would break through in the sixth after a Red Team error, with second baseman Gino Avros making the miscue a costly one with his RBI single.

Black Squad starter Sebastian Martinez suffered the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in his three-inning start.

Game 2 of the Red-Black World Series is scheduled for 3:30pm, Tuesday at Raymond C. Hand Park.
