APSU Women's BasketballClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s basketball team defeated Trevecca, 90-78, Wednesday, at the Winfield Dunn Center.

From the get-go, the Governors (2-2) were led by senior standout Keisha Gregory. Gregory had been struggling a bit to get going, but had ten points alone in the first quarter, which already bettered each of her previous three games.

Gregory, who set the APSU school record last season for free throw percentage, also went nine-for-nine from the line.

Free throw shooting was much better for the Govs, as they went 17-for-19 overall (.895 percentage), a vast improvement from the first three games.

However, the Trojans (0-3) kept the game close throughout much of the contest. The Trojans, like the Govs, ran a very up-tempo offense. Adi Hale matched Gregory shot-for-shot, finishing with 11 points after the first quarter.

The Govs pulled ahead, using a 12-2 run sparked by terrific passes from Maggie Knowles and Brandi Ferby, which both found Gregory cutting to the basket. The Trojans responded to tie the game before Gabby Gregory hit a three as time expired.

The Trojans started the second quarter well, embarking on a 6-0 run to take the lead. The Trojans were shooting around 50 percent for the entire game, allowing them to keep the game close. Trevecca also had the rebounding edge in the first half, but the Gregory duo allowed the Govs to take five-point lead into the break.

Coming out of the break, Arielle Gonzalez-Varner immediately got more involved. The junior had no points and only four boards at the half, but had six points and ten rebounds in the second. The 14 total rebounds matched her career-high, which came last season at Murray State.

While the Govs put the clamps on Hale in the second half, only allowing her to score two points, Callie Hackett got going. The Trojans’ leading scorer coming in, Hackett scored 15 of her game-high 22 points in the second half, a big reason why the Trojans were still hanging around despite six APSU triples in the third quarter alone.

It was still only a five-point game before the Govs erupted from beyond the arc. Brandi Ferby hit threes on back-to-back possessions to stretch the Govs’ lead to 11. After a Govs turnover, Ferby came back down the court and assisted her twin sister Brianah Ferby for another triple before Keisha Gregory hit from the corner at the buzzer to give the Govs some breathing room.

The fourth quarter was largely a back-and-forth affair, with neither team dominating the period. However, Brandi excited head coach David Midlick and the rest of the bench with a tremendous hustle play. Following a long rebound, she beat a Trevecca player to the ball and leaped in mid-air to throw the ball off her opponent and retain possession for the Govs. The Govs calmly finished out the game, with every player scoring tonight.

The Govs return to action, 7:00pm, next Monday, November 19th with a home game against Mississippi Valley State.

David Midlick’s Musings

“I was proud of our defense, especially our three-point defense by holding them to only 4-of-16 shooting from there. I thought we really got on the boards in the second half and ended up grabbing 17 offensive rebounds. Ari did a really good job on the boards and I was glad to see Keisha being more aggressive and take it to the basket. Gabby gave us a lift off the bench with 13 points, so overall a good win. I think on tape we will find we had problems keeping people in front of us one-on-one and did have some box out lapses, but it is a continued work-in progress in November.”
