Montego Bay, Jamaica – Greetings from paradise, because that’s where the Austin Peay State University (APSU) men’s basketball team will tip off Friday’s game against Central Connecticut–at 10:30am (CT) from the Montego Bay Convention Center in Jamaica.
This is the second of four contests in the Jamaica Classic, which runs through November 24th; the next two games will be find the Govs in Montego Bay, and will conclude November 24th at Ohio.
2018 Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year Terry Taylor has certainly avoided a sophomore slump so far; at 19.0 ppg and 10.3 rpg through three games, he’s averaging a double-double and is one of 38 players nationwide with two double-doubles in the season’s first three games.
About the Central Connecticut Blue Devils
Central Connecticut has proven itself deadly from deep, hitting a three-pointer in 101 straight games and hitting a dozen in back-to-back contests after hitting no more than 11 in a game a year ago; they rank 16th nationally at 46.4 percent from long distance.
Tyler Kohl makes things happen for CCSU; he ranks 18th nationally in scoring at a tidy 25.0 points per game, and backs that up by filling the stat sheet pretty much everywhere (8.3 rpg, 4.3 apg, 88.2 free-throw percentage, etc.).
Last Time Out Against Central Connecticut
This is Austin Peay’s first meeting with the Blue Devils. Historically, Austin Peay only has two games against Northeast Conference schools, both losses–to LIU Brooklyn in 1974 and then-member Siena in 1991.
Keep An Eye On
A win would be Austin Peay’s first-ever against an NEC school.
A loss would be Austin Peay’s first in a regular-season neutral-site tournament game since 2015.
The Govs have blocked four shots in each of the first three contests.
It’s been feast or famine for Zach Glotta—against Oakland City and USF, Glotta scored 15 points, while against Mississippi State he was held scoreless.
In Austin Peay’s last contest, a slugfest against USF, a foul was committed on average every 47.8 seconds.
Call it bad luck, good defending, poor shot selection or some toxic mixture of the three—Austin Peay has been held below 40 percent from the floor the last two games. The Govs have not suffered a three-game stretch of sub-40 percent shooting since an 11-game swoon near the end of the 2015 campaign.
The Govs will need to be mindful of freshman Ian Krishnan, who has scored 20-plus each of the last two games.
