Clarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University (APSU) track and field team opens up its 2018-19 indoor campaign by visiting a familiar haunt, just down the road in Nashville, where the Govs will compete at the Vanderbilt Opener, Saturday.
This annual event, held once again inside the multipurpose facility just behind Vanderbilt’s Outdoor Track and Field Complex, continues to attract some of the best talent in the southeast.
In addition to the Govs and host Commodores, student-athletes from Belmont, Memphis, Mercer, Middle Tennessee, Murray State, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech, UALR, Western Kentucky and a plethora of Division II universities.
Two Governors expected to be near the top of the lists in the 60m dash are juniors Tymeitha Tolbert and Diamond Battle. Tolbert was last spotted competing at the 2018 NCAA East Preliminary, which she qualified for in the 100m dash.
Battle was hampered by injury during outdoor season but was an integral part of the relays unit and looks to get back to the form that saw her earn points at last year’s 2017 Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championships.
A trio of Governors—seniors Savannah Amato and Dascha Hix and sophomore Morgan Bradley—begin their quest to sweep the podium at the OVC Indoor Championships in Nashville. Amato also starts her march for an elusive NCAA Indoor Championships qualification, while Bradley looks to build on an OVC Outdoor Freshman of the Year campaign last year and Hix begins her final campaign aiming for yet another medal in OVC competition.
Now a sophomore, Lennex Walker’s 2018 OVC Outdoor appearance was hindered by severe hamstring strain that left her barely able to finish the finals in the 100m hurdles and 200m dash. Among those competing in this weekend’s event, she’s qualified second only to Murray State’s Jabreuna Brimlett in the 60m hurdles, and will be joined as a top qualifier by sophomore Denia Hill-Tate.
Hill-Tate and senior Nia Gibbs-Francis are among the top competitors set to compete in the high jump; Gibbs-Francis’ personal indoor-best 1.66m came at Vanderbilt two years ago at the Commodore Invitational.
For the first time in a while, the Govs will feature multiple athletes dedicated as full-time throwers as the Govs look to add diversify their lineup. Freshmen Jackie Verseman and Kori McDaniel both will compete in the weight throw and shot put in their debut weekend for the Governors.
