Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) track and field closes out the pre-Christmas portion of the indoor schedule with a trip to Carbondale, Illinois for the Saluki Fast Start, Saturday, December 8th, 2018 with the meet scheduled for a 10:00am start.
Hosted by Southern Illinois, this is another opportunity for the Govs to measure themselves in a competition setting ahead of the break.
Joining the Govs and Salukis will be competitors from Maryville, Missouri Baptist, Saint Louis and Ohio Valley Conference foe UT Martin.
Last year, Savannah Amato won (of course) in the pole vault with a 3.66m; she more than a quarter-meter above that mark last week in the opener at Vanderbilt. Then-freshman Denia Hill-Tate and Kaitlyn Black were both top-five in the 60m hurdles last year, with Black’s mark a year ago far short of what she did to open this indoor campaign last week as well.
After a pair of top-10s to open her collegiate career last week, freshman Kori McDaniel will face stiff competition in the weight throw and shot put this week—Southern Illinois is routinely among the area’s better throwing programs, and this meet attracts many post-grad and talented unattached opponents as well.
Elsewhere in the field events, Austin Peay will debut its long and triple jump contingent this week, with sophomore Lennex Walker back after a strained hamstring ended her outdoor season and freshman Camaryn McClelland set to make her Governors debut.
Juniors Diamond Battle and Maya Perry-Grimes will join the 60m fray this week, in an event that saw both Tymeitha Tolbert and Tiyanna Johnson score well a week ago. Among athletes with seeded times, Tolbert’s 7.55 is equal to SIU’s Bri’Anna Branch and five-hundredths of a second behind the Salukis Ty’Juana Eason; they’ll lead the 28-runner field in Carbondale.
With a win and a school-record in the 300m dash under her belt from last week, sophomore Sabrina Richman gets her first crack at the 400m event this week. She’s also among the favorites in the top heat in the 200m dash and also will run the opening leg for the Austin Peay A-group in the 4x400m relay, where she’s scheduled to be followed by Kyra Wilder, Amelia Thiesing and Jessica Kelley.
