Dodging the Roadkill: Layered Up To Throttle Up

Dodging the Roadkill - A Biker's JourneyClarksville, TN – Obviously old man winter has reared his ugly head in many parts of the country, so the days I get to ride are far and few between.

Today was one of those days.

I haven’t had “black beauty” out for a good run in over a week.  On that day, the temps were in the low to mid fifties, but I was still trying to shake a bad cold and just didn’t feel it.

This week, we’ve had rain, ice and some snow flurries, so the best I could do was fire up the “beast” and take it for a quick spin around the neighborhood.  Not much, but it felt good.

As the sun was shining down and the temps were in the mid forties, I just layered up and took off for a couple of hours.  There’s just nothing like it.  I prefer cooler weather to hot temps anyway, and today didn’t disappoint.

The cold air was rushing through me, the sun beaming down, and I felt so content.  It’s one of the many reasons I ride.  The solitude of the solo ride!

Each time I take off on a solo run, I’m confined to my thoughts, my music and my journey.  I’m constantly thinking about my next trip, my next adventure, or the new friends I’ll make as I turn the corner into 2019.

I’m so grateful for this lifestyle and sitting atop my motorcycle, roaring through the Tennessee/Kentucky countryside, my thoughts are of gratitude for my brothers and sisters who ride.  The people I haven’t seen or talked to in a while, and the friends that I miss and need to contact just to see how they’re doing.

The holidays are not always the most “festive” of times for a lot of us and just a little bit of encouragement, or a simple, “hey, how you doing” goes a long way.

Anyone who’s suffered with depression, or is struggling with PTSD can relate to how important it is to know that someone was thinking of you, or took the time to just say, “hello!”

I’m extremely grateful for this blog and the people it’s brought into my life.  The friends I ride with.  The friends from all across the country who share their journey with me, or just reach out to say something encouraging.  That’s the power of the internet, and I love it!

So as I was rumbling through the countryside today, doing my best to keep my fingertips warm, I couldn’t help but just smile and thank God for this journey.

If there’s someone you haven’t seen or spoken with in a while, pick up the phone and call them.  Send them a text message, or a Facebook message and tell them, “hey, you were on my mind and I was just checking to see how you were doing.”

That’s what I was led to do today, as I layered up and throttled up on this cold winter day.  This is such an incredible journey and each of us have an exclusive ride we’re on.

Share the joy of the holidays, enjoy each and every minute you have, and remember, not everybody is having a “happy” holiday.

I love you guys!
