Clarksville, TN – CDE Lightband says winter is officially upon us. With the colder temperatures comes higher electric usage.
This usage is primarily due to heating load. The colder it gets, the more you have to heat your home.
You can mitigate extremely high usage by setting your thermostat to 68 degrees when occupied, as low as 65 when your home is vacant.
One thing that our customers may not know is auxiliary heat is the main culprit for extremely high usage. Auxiliary heat is a type of supplemental electric heat that your heat pump uses when outside air is too cold to efficiently heat.
Typically, you do not have control over your auxiliary heat, it is automatically activated when outside air temperature is around 32 degrees and lower.
